One year and two days ago I met a man by the name of Michael. My friend Michelle said to me that she loved us both and that we needed to meet. So we did. Now I understand why.
Michael’s been a tremendous gift to me this year: bringing me up when I didn’t realize that I needed to be, reminding me that men are great beings and that they should be loved just as I should be, that gifts come in all sorts of packages, that strangers aren’t strange when minds and hearts are open, that miracles happen every day, acceptance is free, Louisville is small and I am an artist.
That’s a lot to learn in three hundred and sixty seven days from one guy whose body mass and collected years could never match mine.
I guess I am one really lucky girl. Just maybe Michael is one really lucky guy. Maybe neither of us will know for a long time yet to come.
This evening Michael and I chose to get together to celebrate a year of knowing one another. It’s an interesting relationship that I absolutely love. Perhaps because it is anything but ordinary.
For a year Michael and I have gotten together once a month for a couple of drinks. Some months it’s been just the two of us. Some months I’ve met his whole family and closest friends. While other months he has met my friends while I was meeting his co-workers.
Michael has invited me into his private spaces, his intimate relationships and his inner circle. That’s a lot of trust he has thrust upon me. Now I wonder what have I given him in return.
We have never exchanged telephone numbers. Our communication is strictly through e-mail and Facebook. We’ve both been to the other’s home. Tonight we sipped on ales at the Holy Grail while we came to know one another just a little bit more.
Michael inspires me. I’m going to keep showing up. Based on this evening’s conversation the next time we get together it might just be for cosmopolitans instead of ales.
Sweet Dreams to you and all those who delight in your presence! Maggie ã
