It is a practice of mine to pretty much exclusively shop at locally owned businesses. I do so because such a practice really does make a difference in my local economy.
The more money I spend at locally owned businesses the better my quality of life because the more money those businesses spend in Louisville. My little community is rich because ‘Buy Local’ and ‘Louisville Original’ is taken seriously.
I take my investment in my community seriously and I take what happened to me today very seriously. Don Preston at Preston Art’s Center believed in me enough to go the extra marathon so that my next First Friday Trolley Hop could be executed without a hitch.
With most of the details left out the bottom line was this. Don was able to sell me the perfect material for my artistic needs. Unfortunately, Don didn’t have enough of the canvas that I needed. So he told me not to worry. I bought what he had and he ordered another role.
The problem was the product I needed was no longer manufactured. It’s on the endangered species list. It will be extinct before I graduate from school.
So, Don, the local business owner, called the manufacturer for help. The manufacturer knew Don ran a tight business. What happened next wouldn’t happen at a chain store. At a chain store I probably would have simply been told, “Sorry,” and sent on my way.
But because it was Preston Art’s Center miracles happened. The manufacturer telephoned every store they had sold the material to in the past looking to see if any one still had a supply of it. And they found an art supplier in another state who over-nighted the canvas to Louisville so that I could have it today.
Buying local means investing in one’s future. Preston Art’s Center has invested in mine and I have invested in theirs. We’re both going to be around for a long time making art, creating beauty, investing in our tomorrow by buying local today.
Sweet Dreams to you and all those who support their local businesses and their local economy! Maggie ã
